Best Classical Album

These four extraordinary discs are the culmination of the yearlong exploration of Beethoven's piano and violin sonatas that Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis performed throughout the world in 1998. The recordings were made in connection with performances at the Rheingau Musik Festival in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Included with these performances is a Schott CD-pluscore which can be used by those with the ability to run CD-ROM computer programs. One sonata on each disc is treated in this manner. This program includes:

  • musical scores of the recorded works for viewing and printing
  • a playback cursor for following the recording and score simultaneously
  • MIDI files of the works recorded to practice with and to create personal interpretations
  • Illustrated articles on the artists, the works and their composer

"...for a set of performances whose constant probing and ability to turn convention on its head is fully equal to the trail-blazing spirit of its creator, then Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis now take the palm."
