This recording is the second release of Corigliano's first symphony, the premiere recording having been made by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim conducting. This new disc is entitled "Of Rage and Remembrance", which is the title of the short, choral work that precedes and is based on Symphony No. 1. The insert cover shows a picture of the AIDS quilt spread out on Washington's Mall with the Capitol in the background. John Corigliano was inspired to write these moving works through his friendship with individuals who had died from this terrible disease.

"It says much for the playing of the National Symphony Orchestra that it matches that of Barenboim's Chicago Symphony Orchestra in every way…"

"…what I specially value in the new performance is that with sharper focus and clarity of stereo definition - with recorded sound of a vividness I have never previously known from a live recording in the Kennedy Center - one can appreciate how controlled Corigliano's argument is, no mere emotional outpouring deep though his feelings are."
