Selected Piano Music (Deuxième Banjo, Solitude, La Brise,
Souvenir de la Havane, Le Chant du Martyr, Manchega, La Savane, Union) Born in New Orleans in 1829, Louis Moreau Gottschalk was America's first superstar of classical music. Virtuoso pianist and composer, he studied in Europe and toured throughout the world. This disc contains eight of Gottschalk's piano works, all of which are quite engaging, very diverse, and showcase Gottschalk's versatility in using musical influences from many different cultures. The instrument Lambert Orkis plays on this recording, an 1865 Chickering grand piano which is part of the instrument collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, is the type of piano that Gottschalk used for his performances. These works were recorded in the historic Coolidge Auditorium of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.
"...wow, what a CD! It's the greatest entertainment piano show of the year."
"I first heard him [Lambert Orkis] in a superb recital of Gottschalk performances, rendered impeccably on a beautifully restored Chickering grand..."
