RICHARD WERNICK:

Piano Concerto (1989-90)
With Symphony II, Richard Wernick, conductor
Bridge Records. Compact Disc: Bridge 9082

This riveting concerto was written for Lambert Orkis and The National Symphony Orchestra with Mstislav Rostropovich conducting, and was premiered in 1991 at the Kennedy Center, Washington, DC, and in New York's Carnegie Hall. The European premiere took place in 1993 in The Hague, The Netherlands with Lambert Orkis once more at the piano and the composer conducting Het Residentie Orkest.

"His concertos for violin (1984) and piano (1990) combine enormous technical accomplishment with a distinctive, oratorical fervour; both works undoubtedly command respect in their unstinting refusal to compromise. The performances are authoritative, the recordings admirably realistic."
Gramophone
